Beechworth is a High Country town where gold-rush streetscapes, public history and dry-forest country meet. The official visitor guide (opens in a new tab) is a useful starting point for a self-paced visit through town and its surrounds.
The Beechworth Historic Precinct includes the Old Beechworth Gaol, courthouse, museum and other 19th-century civic buildings. Indigo Shire’s precinct information (opens in a new tab) explains that the precinct is on Australia’s National Heritage List. Check current access, tours and tickets with the visitor service before making plans.
Beechworth Historic Park sits close to town and holds traces of the Spring and Reids Creek goldfields. Parks Victoria describes a 12-kilometre network of tracks in the Gorge area, with several entry points and former mining sites to explore on foot. Use the park page (opens in a new tab) for current conditions and closures; the Spring Creek Bridge is currently closed, so routes may not connect as expected.
For an easy orientation to the historic landscape, Parks Victoria’s five-kilometre scenic route (opens in a new tab) can be driven, walked or cycled. It links points including the Powder Magazine, granite tors and historic bridges. Take rubbish with you, leave plants and artefacts where they are, and follow any local access notices.
Conditions, access and services can change. Confirm transport, park conditions, accessibility, opening hours and any bookings directly with the relevant provider before you travel.
